Has it really been 3 months since the U.S. Half Marathon? Guess that means it’s time to train for another event!
Last month, I signed up to run the Santa Cruz Half in April, thinking that I had plenty of time, so I didn’t need to worry about getting back in the groove. But time sneaks up on you as always, and the run is now in 8 weeks–just enough time to get the proper amount of training (because yes, no matter how many times I’ve run a half, I can’t just jump in and do one without preparation :)).
Our ever-reliable J9 put together a training plan for us to follow, and our first run was a 6-miler this past Saturday. We’re holding on that pattern this Saturday as well, before we jump to 8 next week. This is a good thing, since the 6-miler last week felt like a genuine struggle. Hey, it’s been over 2 months since I ran anything more than 4 miles, so I deserve a little slack, no?
But not too much, as I’ve got to get into shape rather quickly. I leave for a 10-day trip to Italy (and no, I will not be taking my running shoes with me) in 4 weeks, so I will need to get as much running in before then, since I’ll be in taper once I get back. Needless to say, it’ll be an accelerated ramp-up.
I’m not expecting any PR’s, although I’d be lying if I said I don’t want one. I came thisclose at the U.S. Half, but those pesky hills kept me from breaking time. Hoping that the flat(ter) surface this time gives me the boost I’m looking for.
If I get in the training I need, that is :).
